[i am] Project KALI - Celebration of Womanhood
Baltimore, Maryland, United States of America
[i am] Project KALI - Celebration of Womanhood is a social justice, arts-based initiative centered around women's emotional needs and wants that are expressed through the use of fiber by creating art that includes: puppets, doll houses, quilts, and wall-hangings. The project was initiated in October 2015 at the Men and Families Center, Inc. in East Baltimore to launch an art-based program for its clients. The project secured a seed grant by The Pollination Project (California) and France-Merrick Opportunity Fund by MICA's Office of Community Engagement in January and August 2016. With the support from these funds participants were able to create and share artworks depicting their personalities and healing journeys. The artworks were displayed in three art spaces: a group show curated by Jie Yu titled 'More Like You' at Gallery Four in March, 'Not Alone Baltimore: A Monument Quilt Display' in April, and a final end of the year exhibition at Rouse Gallery in May.
